The vestments worn by the priest enhance the beauty of a Catholic religious service. Each has it’s own meaning and history. Although the traditional vestments were designed long ago, the spiritual value remains today. Here are the basic catholic vestments.

The Chasuble is an outer garment that traditionally includes a cross on the back. The word chasuble means “little house” and it gives shelter to the wearer. Under the chasuble is a simple white garment called the Alb. The Alb covers the whole body. Although the color of the chasuble may vary by liturgical season, the Alb is always white and symbolizes purity. The Amice is a shawl that is worn over the shoulders and neck. It traditionally protected the head of clergy from the elements. The Amice is made of fine linen and stands for the helmet of salvation. The Stole represents the spiritual authority of the priest. It is a long thin piece of material worn over the neck and it hangs down on both sides.

The deep religious tradition of Catholic vestments feed the spirit as the service fills the soul.
